Tash Wolf’s Top 4 Guitar Inspiration
Tash Wolf’s Top 4 Guitar Inspirations:
Gear:
Having the right gear based on personalised taste + style is so important. For me my Strandberg Salen & Fender Stratocaster is a workhorse for Guitar tones. The Line 6 Helix Stomp XL is an effect presets pedal that I automate to change presets for my Live Show. In a song like The Deal, the song changes from the edgy main guitar riff to the dreamy tone in the pre-chorus. You can dial in tones from all characters of Amps, Pre Amps, Compressors, Delays and Modulators. It’s a great pedal to draw inspiration from as I can customise and create my own presets from scratch.
Music, Books + Media:
I find consuming a wide variety of music, videos, books, and interviews of the artists and the creative process helps me draw inspiration for my own music. I loved the documentary about David Bowie’s life, Moonshine Daydream. He explored so many avenues as an artist with each album he reinvented his style, sound and character. I recently read Kim Gordon’s memoir, who fronted the band Sonic Youth for 30 years. It follows her life in the studio, on the road and growing up in the 80’s exploring New York and LA’s bustling Arts/Music scene.
Jimi Hendrix, Prince & SRV
The nostalgia left behind by artists such as Jimi Hendrix, Prince & SRV is where I found my initial sound inspiration. With a song like The Deal, the main Guitar riff definitely references a combination of all those artists. Hendrix and SRV wrote very riff based songs but someone like Prince brought a modern sense of soundscapes and songwriting to his repertoire. Their aesthetic and fashion almost always influence the photo shoots I do!
Live Music
Some of my favourite inspirations for Guitar have been watching my favourite bands and Artists Live. Nothing beats it! To name a few Brian Adams (I also was lucky enough to join him for a guest feature, Guitar solo at his previous performance in Sydney). Kenny Wayne Shepherd, John Mayer, Gary Clark Jnr, George Benson, Paul McCartney, Al Green, Daniel Caesar, Bruno Mars, Plini, Josh Smith, Doobie Brothers, Dead and Company, Kamasi Washington, Mateus Asato, Shawn Mendes and Jon Bellion.
